The Montagna i Torricchio State Natural Reserve, established in 1970 and recognized in 1977, is located in the Macerata hinterland north of the Monti Sibillini National Park, in the municipality of Pievetorina. It extends for about 320 hectares and develops on a gradient ranging from 820 to 1,491 meters above sea level. in the Val di Cup, between the Cetrognola and Torricchio mountains to the north and Monte Fema to the south. Geographically, it is part of the Umbria-Marche Apennines.

Description

In the reserve numerous species of phanerogams belonging to different ecological typologies of vegetation have been identified, such as thermophilic and mesophilic woods, bare and bushy secondary pastures. Present coppice beech woods and in part with a high trunk with the presence of yew, holly, hornbeam and ash. Among the nemoral species we remember the anemone, the snowdrop and the martagon lily, while among those of the pastures the narcissus, the gentianella and the elder orchid. Studies conducted in the reserve show the presence of numerous animal species including: arachnids, opilionidae, cerambycid beetles, macrolepidoptera, tardigrade, nesting birds, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. Of particular interest is the presence of wolves, Italian partridges, geotritons, honey buzzards, sparrow hawks and buzzards. In the surroundings of the reserve there are numerous places worth visiting such as the Museum of Our Land of Pievetorina, the Hermitage of SantAngelo in Prefoglio, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria in Caspriano di Casavecchia and the Pinacoteca Chiesa di San Giovanni with paintings of the fourteenth century. Prof. Prof. Andrea contributed to the birth and growth of the Torricchio Oasis Franco Pedrotti of the University of Camerino, director of the Reserve.

Information for the visit

Since this is an integral reserve, visits are allowed with the authorization of the Managing Body for the sole purpose of study, research and teaching. There are environmental education activities in the classroom and in the field for schools.

How to get:
It can be reached with the SS 209 that connects Terni with the SS 77 near Maddalena di Muccia (MC).
